Abraham LincolnAbraham Lincoln, the sixteenth President of the United States, successfully led his country through its greatest internal crisis, the American Civil War, only to be assassinated less than a week after the war's end. 

Before his election as President, Lincoln was a lawyer, an Illinois state legislator, a member of the United States House of Representatives, and an unsuccessful candidate for election to the Senate.

While attending Our American Cousin, President Abraham Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth. The President was taken across the street from the theater to the Petersen House, where he lay in a coma for nine hours before dying. Lincoln never regained consciousness and was pronounced dead at 7:22:10 a.m. April 15, 1865.
