Hog Jowl and Turnip Greens

Hog jowl is not available everywhere.  It is "country cured" like ham.

Prep Time: 20 min.
Cooking Time: 1 hr. 10 min.


  • 1-1/2 to 2 - pounds jog jowl
  • Boiling water (to cover)
  • 2 - quarts turnip tops (well cleaned)
  • 2 - teaspoon salt
  • 1 - teaspoon pepper


  1. In a large stock pot, place jowl.  Cover with boiling water and cook for about 40 minutes or until meat is tender and comes easily off the skin and bone.  Place on a heated platter.
  2. To the stock pot with jowl liquid, add the turnips tops, salt, and pepper.
  3. Cover and slowly cook for 30 minutes or until greens are tender.
  4. From from liquid, drain, cut up, and place around the warm hog jowls.
  5. Serve in bowls with pot liquid.
