Fried Green Tomatoes with Buttermilk Chipotle Dressing

  • Buttermilk Chipotle Dressing:
    • 1/4 cup buttermilk
    • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
    • 1 tablespoon cider vinegar
    • 1/4 teaspoon Chile Pepper, Chipotle
    • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Green Tomatoes:
    • 1 cup cornmeal
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 1 teaspoon Oregano Leaves, Mediterranean
    • 1-1/2 pounds green tomatoes, halved and cut into 1/2-inch slices
    • 1/2 cup buttermilk
    • 1/2 cup oil
  • Salad:
    • 1 package (5 ounces) salad greens
    • 1/2 cup thinly sliced Vidalia onions



  1. In a small bowl, whisk buttermilk, mayonnaise, vinegar, chile pepper, and salt until well blended and smooth.
  2. Refrigerate until ready to serve.


  1. In a shallow dish, mix cornmeal, salt and oregano.
  2. Dip tomatoes in buttermilk to moisten.
  3. Dip into cornmeal mixture until well coated.
  4. Heat 1/4 cup of the oil in large skillet on medium heat.
  5. Fry tomatoes, several slices at a time, 2 to 4 minutes per side, turning once.
  6. Drain on paper towels. Keep warm while frying remaining tomato slices.
  7. Add remaining 1/4 cup oil as needed.


  1. Mix salad greens and onions.
  2. Divide equally among 8 salad plates.
  3. Top with tomatoes.
  4. Drizzle each salad with the Dressing and serve immediately.
