Located at the extreme tip of
West Virginia's northern panhandle, Tomlinson Run
provides a wide range of recreational opportunities
to a large number of local and out-of-state
visitors.
The park's 1,398 acres extend
along the stream from which it gets its name, both
of which are named for a family of early settlers,
to within a mile of the stream's confluence with the
Ohio River.
Roughly divided into two
sections, the park offers a wilderness area of
heavily forested hills, overhanging cliffs of
sandstone and shale, and a profusion of wildflowers
and fauna. Featured within the developed areas of
the park are picnicking, boating, miniature golf,
basketball and volleyball courts, swimming, a
campground and a group camp. In addition,
program events are scheduled from April through
October.
Tomlinson Run offers a 54-site
campground with contact station, convenience store,
dump station, and two bathhouses featuring hot
showers and laundry facilities. All sites are
suitable for tent or trailer and feature picnic
tables and grills; while 39 sites feature electric
hookups. Open April 1st through October 31.
There is also a Rustic Camping
Area which is offered as a great area for scouts
and other groups looking to rough it.
Rent-A-Camp/Yurt Rental is a
unique offering only at Tomlinson Run and is perfect
for the novice camper. For a modest overnight fee,
you may rent a 6 person lodge tent or yurt, complete
with a dining canopy, cooler, a propane stove,
lantern, picnic table and cookware, all waiting for
you. Six Rent-A-Camp sites are available at the
park.
The park's Group Camp
offers a perfect locale for church retreats, 4-H
outings, civic meetings and other social gatherings.
Featuring 10 cabins, which sleep 10 each and
counselor's quarters for 12, the camp is a
bring-your-own cook proposition with a fully
equipped kitchen and dining hall. The nearby
recreation building has a stage for skits and
movies, plus tables for indoor projects or games.
The park offers three picnic
shelters that can be reserved by the day for a
modest fee. Otherwise, they are available on a
first-come, first served basis.
Over 33 acres of water in the
form of various ponds and lakes offer excellent
fishing for bass, catfish, bluegill and trout. In
addition, a part of the water-oriented activities at
the park are boat docks where rental row and
paddleboats are offered for your enjoyment. Chief
among Tomlinson Run's recreational facilities is the
swimming pool, the waterslide/bathhouse complex and
snack bar (open from Memorial Day weekend to Labor
Day). The pool boasts a 182-foot figure eight-shaped
water slide. Not far from the pool area are
basketball and volleyball courts, horseshoe pits,
miniature golf and playground equipment.
A network of hiking trails round
out the recreational possibilities.
