Pebble paths lead
to several somewhat secluded picnic sites within
impressive old growth stands of virgin red spruce.
Located
approximately 7 miles north and west of Durbin, West
Virginia, on Shavers Mountain.
From Durbin travel
west on US Route 250 for approximately 6 miles to
Forest Road 485. Turn north (right turn) and travel
approximately 1 mile.
Open year round.
Each site includes:
- Table
- Grill
- Waste receptacle
- An accessible
vault toilet is available.
Hiking
The Allegheny Trail, #701, is located at the
Gaudineer Scenic Area. The West Fork Trail, #312, is
located along the Shaver's Fork River.
Scenic Area
The Gaudineer Scenic Area includes approximately 50
acres of virgin red spruce which is representative
of vegetation that originally occupied large
portions of the highland areas of West Virginia.
There are no fees
for use of the picnic area.
Reservable - No.
Sites are on a first come, first served basis.
- Avoid this area
when the wind is blowing as falling limbs or
trees are likely due to the age of the old
growth stands.
