High
atop Bickle Knob sits the Bickle Knob
Observation Tower where visitors can catch the panoramic vista
of the surrounding forest.
Located
approximately 10 miles northeast of Elkins, West
Virginia, on Stuart Memorial Drive (Forest Road 91).
From
Elkins, go east on State Highway 33 for
approximately 4 miles. Turn north on WV Route 33/8
(old US Route 33) and travel approximately 2 miles.
Turn north on WV Route 6 and drive 1/2 mile just
past the entrance to Stuart Recreation Area. Turn
right on Stuart Memorial Drive (Forest Road 91) and
go approximately 4 miles and turn left on Forest
Road 91A.
Open
year round, however, Forest Road 91 is not plowed in
the winter time and may be icy or snow-covered.
An
observation deck provides visitors a 360 degree view
of the surrounding forest.
Hiking
Middle Point Trail, #140, which is 5.2 miles in
length, is located along Stuart Memorial Drive west
of the picnic/campground area. There are several trails in the Otter Creek Wilderness that
offer more challenging experiences because the trail
junctions are not signed and there are no bridges
over stream crossing. Topo maps are recommended for
wilderness adventures.
Fishing
is allowed along Otter Creek. A valid West Virginia
State Fishing License is required, along with a
National Forest stamp and a trout stamp. Please
contact the West Virginia Division of Natural
Resources for more information on fishing and
hunting licensing requirements.
There
are campsite sites available at the Bear Heaven
Campground and Stuart Recreation Area Campground.
The Stuart Group Camp is available for large groups.
