Ginger Pears

Grandma Showalter's Pennsylvania Dutch Cooking from AlansKitchen.comIngredients

  • 2 - pounds pears, peeled and quartered, thinly sliced
  • 1 - lemon, juice and narrow strips of rind
  • 2 - pounds sugar
  • 1/2 - cup water
  • 2 - ounces ginger root


  1. In a kettle at low heat, combine the water, lemon jucie, lemon rind, and sugar.
  2. Stir and add the ginger. Simmer for 45 minutes or until mixture becomes clear and syrupy.
  3. Add the pears and continue to simmer for 45 minutes, or when the fruit becomes transparent.
  4. Pour into hot, sterilized jars.
