Spiced Pears I

Grandma Showalter's Pennsylvania Dutch Cooking from AlansKitchen.comIngredients

  • 5 - pounds pears
  • 1 - box whole cloves
  • 3-1/2 - cups cider vinegar
  • 5 - cups brown sugar
  • 3 - sticks cinnamon, broken into pieces


  1. Peel pears but do not core. Retain any stems.
  2. Stick 2 or 3 cloves in each pear.
  3. In a saucepan at low heat, pour the cider vinegar and sugar, add cinnamon.
  4. Simmer until sugar dissolves.
  5. Increase heat to moderate and bring to a boil. Add the pears.
  6. Cook until pears are tender.
  7. Place in 2 large jars, pour in syrup until almost overflows and seal.
