Apple Dumplings
Grandma Showalter's Pennsylvania Dutch Cooking from AlansKitchen.comMakes 6 servings


  • Dough

    • 1 - egg

    • 2/3 - cup milk

    • 2-1/2 - cups flour, sifted

    • 2-1/2 - teaspoons baking powder

    • 1/4 - teaspoon salt

  • 6 - apples

  • Cinnamon and sugar

  • 6 - Tablespoon butter

  • 1/2 - cup brown sugar

  • 1/2 - cup butter

  • 1/4 - teaspoon vanilla (optional)


Preheat oven 425� F.

  1. Mix egg and milk together in a bowl and sift in flour, baking powder, and salt. 

  2. Stir to make a soft dough. 

  3. Turn out on floured board and knead lightly. 

  4. Roll and cut in 6 squares. 

  5. Place in centers a peeled, cored apple that has been quartered. 

  6. Sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon, dot with butter, and bring up corners of dough to enclose apple. 

  7. Pinch and seal. 

  8. Place dumplings in a large pan, not touching.

  9. Bake for 10 minutes, then at 350� F. for 45 minutes. 

  10. Test by pricking with toothpick and, if apples are tender, they are done. 

  11. Sprinkle with a little sugar and cinnamon. 

  12. Cream brown sugar and butter, add flavoring if desired and spoon on hot dumplings when served.
