Soft Molasses Cookies

Pennsylvania Dutch Cooking from AlansKitchen.com(This is the big soft molasses cookie that melts in your mouth, especially if eaten as it comes from the oven. It is my grandmother's recipe and I remember that she used to spread a hot cookie with butter for me, just as it came from the oven. Nothing has ever tasted so good since.)

  • 1 - cup lard

  • 1/2 - cup sugar

  • 1 - cup molasses

  • 1 - cup sour milk

  • 2 - teaspoons baking soda, dissolved in 1 tablespoon hot water

  • 3 - cups flour, sifted

  • 1/2 - teaspoon salt

Preheat oven to 350 F. Grease cookie sheets.

  1. Soften lard, cream with sugar, mix with molasses.

  2. Add sour milk, baking soda, and water.

  3. Mix well.

  4. Sift in flour and salt.

  5. Roll out quickly and lightly on floured board to 3/8-inch thickness.

  6. Cut with a teacup-sized cutter and place on cookie sheets.

  7. Bake for about 12 minutes.
