Molasses Cream Cookies

Pennsylvania Dutch Cooking from AlansKitchen.comIngredients:

  •       1  cup baking molasses

  •    1/2  cup lard or shortening

  •    1/2  cup sugar

  •    1/4  cup sour cream

  • 2 to 2-1/2  cups flour, sifted

  • 1-1/2  teaspoons ginger

  • 1-1/2  teaspoons baking soda


Preheat oven to 350� F. and grease cookie sheets.

  1. Place molasses in mixing bowl, adding melted lard, sugar, and sour cream. Mix. 

  2. Sift flour, ginger, and soda and sift into bowl. 

  3. Mix to consistency of biscuit dough, roll out, not too thin, on floured board and cut in squares. Place dough on cookie sheets.

  4. Bake in oven for about 10 minutes.

  5. Then ice with:

  •    1/2  cup sugar

  • 1-1/2  Tablespoons water

  •       2  Tablespoons butter

  •    1/8  teaspoon vanilla

  1. Boil together until firm, soft ball can be formed when tested in water. 

  2. Beat a little until cool and creamy, add a little vanilla, and spread on cookies.
