Amish Cookies

Ingredients:
- 2-1/2 cups sugar
- 1-1/8 cups shortening
- 3
eggs
- 2/3 cup dark
molasses
- 1
cup sour milk
- 6-1/2 cups flour
- 2
Tablespoon baking powder
- 3
Tablespoons cinnamon
- 2
Tablespoons baking soda
- 1-1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
- 2
cups oatmeal
- 1
cup raisins
- 3/4 cup chopped
peanuts or walnuts
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350°F. and grease cookie
sheets.
- In a large mixing bowl, cream sugar and
shortening.
- Add eggs and beat well.
- Add milk and molasses alternately with
sifted flour, baking powder, cinnamon, baking soda, and
nutmeg.
- Add oatmeal, raisins, and nuts and mix
with hands.
- With a rounded teaspoon, drop dough on
prepared baking sheets and bake for 8 to 10 minutes.
Alan's Kitchen Tip:
- 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar
plus enough milk to make 1 cup.
