Mrs. Schill's Devil's Food Cake
Makes 1 cake.
- 1 - teaspoon baking soda dissolved in 1/2 cup
- 2 - ounces chocolate, melted in hot water, to make 1/2 cup
- 1/2 - cup shortening
- 2 - cups brown sugar, loosely packed
- 3 -
- 1 - teaspoon vanilla
- 1/2 - cup hot coffee
- 2 - cups flour, sifted
Preheat oven to 350° F. Grease & flour
loaf cake pan.
Mix soda and sour milk. Melt chocolate in cup by filling cup with
Cream shortening with half the sugar. Beat egg yolks with
balance of sugar and add this to butter and sugar.
Beat well. Stir
in chocolate and hot water, vanilla and hot coffee.
Beat again. Stir
in sifted flour, alternately with sour milk. Beat for 3 minutes.
Bake for about 35 minutes.
Pour batter into loaf cake pan.
