There was no mistake about a
hearty breakfast to these early settlers. The breakfast included
ham and eggs, buckwheat cakes and sausage, fried mush dripping
with maple syrup, country-fried potatoes, gingerbread hot from
the oven, and always a Shoofly pie (and other kinds of pies),
doughnuts or crullers, and just to round things off, some hot
biscuit, sticky buns, or muffins or waffles, not to mention the
fresh-churned butter and the array of jams and jellies.
Because of the day of milking
the cows, feeding the chickens and other livestock, working the
fields, baking, housework, cooking, and even barn raising, they
were ready for the day’s activity.
