Federal Bread

This is bread that you tear apart, butter and eat hot.

Pennsylvania Dutch Cooking from AlansKitchen.comMakes 1 loaf


 1 - package active yeast dissolved in 2 cups scaled milk
4 - Tablespoons butter
3 - cups all-purpose flour
3 - eggs
1 - Tablespoon sugar
1/2 - teaspoon salt


Preheat oven to 375 F.

  1. Dissolve yeast into heating milk.
  2. Add butter also to the heating milk.
  3. Into a large mixing bowl, sift flour. 
  4. Make a hole in the milled and pour yeast, milk, and butter mixture. 
  5. Add the egg, sugar, and salt. You want to mix with a spoon.
  6. Pour into a well-greased pan, set aside to rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until the dough doubles in size. 
  7. Place in oven and bake 50 minutes to 1 hour.
