Fay's White Bread

Pennsylvania Dutch Cooking from AlansKitchen.comMakes 2 loaves

Prep Time: 20 min
Rising Time: 2 hrs + 2 hrs
Baking Time: 30 min

Ingredients:

  • 1       package dry yeast
  • 1/2    cup warm water
  • 1/3    cup sugar
  • 2       teaspoons salt
  • 2       cups warm water
  • 2-1/2  Tablespoons melted shortening
  • 6 or 7 cups flour

Directions:

  1. Dissolve yeast in 1/2-cup warm water.
  2. In a large bowl, combine sugar, salt, 2-cups water, and shortening.
  3. Add yeast mixture.
  4. Gradually add flour to form a soft dough.
  5. Turn onto a floured surface and knead until smooth.
  6. Place in greased bowl. Cover and let rise about 2 hours.
  7. Punch down.
  8. Divided into 2 portions and form into loaves.
  9. Place in greased bread pans and prick tops with fork.
  10. Let rise until higher than pans (about 2 hours).

Preheat oven to 375° F.

  1. Bake for 25 - 30 minutes. Cool 10 minutes.
  2. Butter tops of loaves. Place pans on side until loosened.
  3. Remove bread and cool completely.
