Casa Malpais Site

  • It was declared a National Historic Landmark on July 19, 1964.

The landmark is situated on terraces of a fallen basalt cliff along the upper Little Colorado River, the site dates from late Pueblo III to early Pueblo IV (1250-1325 AD) times.  Casa Malpais appears to incorporate features of both early and late Mogollon Culture settlement patterns.

There are no threats to the landmark.

The park service works with the Center for Desert Archaeology, based out of Tucson, AZ.. In the past few years the site has been backfilled and stabilized. It is monitored on a daily basis by tour guides through out the year.
